 Cancer the Crab

 

 

History

     Cancer is Latin for the word crab. The constellation is small with faint stars. Cancer is said to be the Sun of the South or aslo known as Praesepe. It is associated with the 4th month Duzu. (June-July) Cancer is hard to see but if there was agood time to see Cancer it would be during the summer.

 

5 Brightest Stars 

 

                             Beta Cancri is the brightest star. It also has the traditional name Altarf, which meas tip in Arabic. It is approximately 290 Light years from Earth. It is an orange K-typegiant with an apparent magnitude of +3.50 and absolute magnitude of -1.25. Its R.A. is 08h 16m 30.95and its Dec. is   +09° 11′ 08.4″.  The stars spectra class is K4.

 

                             Delta Cancri is the second brightest star. Its apparent magnitude is +3.94 and the absolute magnitude is 0.84. Its about 136 light years away. The R.A. of the star

is  08h 44m 41.11s and the Dec. of the star is +09° 11′ 08.4″. The Spectra class of the star is K0.

 

                       Iota Cancri is the third brightest star in the Cancer constellation. It is about 298 light years away from the Earth. Its apparent magnitude is 4.03 and its absolute magnitude is -0.77. The R.A. is 08h 46m 41.83s and the Dec.is +28° 45′ 36.0″. The Spectra class of this star is G8.

 

                      Alpha Cancri is the fourth brightest star in the constellation. It is 173 light years away from earth. The apparent magnitude of this star is about 4.26 and the absolute magnitude is 0.63. The R.A. is 08h 58m 29.20s the Dec. of the star is +11° 51′ 28.0″. The spectra class is A5.

 

                      Gamma Cancri is the fith brightest star. Its 158 light years away and its spectra class is A1. The apparent magnitude of the star is 4.66 and the absolute magnitude is 1.23. The R.A. of the star is 08h 43m 17.21s and the Dec. of the star is +21° 28′ 06.9.

 

Deep Sky Objects

  

     Cancer is best know for its Beehive Cluster. The Beehive Cluster is an open cluster. It is also known as Praesepe. Beehive Cluster is home to many stars and is also one of the closest open clusters to are Solar System.

     A smaller deep sky object is the Messier 67. It is also an open cluster, just like the Beehive Cluster. It was just found out that the age of this cluster is around four billion years old. That is just slighty younger then are sun. The star count for this cluster is around 500, many of the stars are like are sun and red giants.
